  • Who's Mustang? #3

Here's another one from Oct. 1962.
This is what I found so far.
    1963: N5077K (Jim Jeffers) race #83
    1963: (Contractor Equipment Sales)
    1966: (Fowler Aeronautical Services)
    1969: (Air Carriers Inc)
    1969: N711UP (Gale Aero Corp)
1976: N71TF (Tom Friedkin, Cinema Air Inc)
Does any one have photos of this one as race #83

    Mystery Mustang

I THINK that is the Mustang that was raced by Jim Fugate as race #83 and #77- with the "extended wings"............

I will investigate further when I get home from "work".......

I think Clown Boy is right, in that it is Fugate's plane. But if it indeed ran as 711UP, then it's also one that Mike Loening raced at Reno one year....I think it was 1969. It was race #0, and during the race the canopy 'exploded'. Nothing like racing an open cockpit Mustang.

          Green??

I never thought a Mustang could be ugly, but that is a paint color only a Mother could love. Yuck!!

            N711UP Race #0 Canopy

            Matt Man,

The canopy on Mike Loening's #0 didn't really "explode",
it cracked and was sucked out of the frame- The same thing
happened to Leroy Penhall's #81 at Reno 1969.

If you look in the Jim Larsen Air Racing Directory I gave you, it has a picture of Penhall taxiing in with his "open cockpit" Mustang!

Here is a picture of Leroy Penhall and Race #81, from Reno 1970.

            All the best, RG

I have boxes of snap shots I have just started scanning-
Guess I should learn how to clean them up like that!
