Politically Incorrect Hypothetical World War Three Bet of the Day...

If the Starfighters were to go up against the F-4's and early F-14's in Iran's air force in a dogfight, where would you place your bet?

If the F-14s are airworthy and had a full complement of weapons it would destroy both the F-4 and F-104 in every conceivable scenario. Likewise the F-4 would cream the F-104. The 104 is one of few airplanes the F-4 can out turn, the 104 has a poor radar and limited weapons and only one pilot. One of my F-4 instructors was one of the few who flew the 104 in SEA and although he loved the airplane as a hot rod there was a very valid reason it was withdrawn from combat. It wasn't much of a war machine.

Didn't Kelly Johnson come up with a design to augment the F-104 to compete with the F-15?

It's probably Starfighters Aerospace in FL.

The 104 was an interceptor, its job was to get ahead of any defensive fighters and get at strategic bombers... the goal being to never get in a dogfight at all. And it actually lacked the range to do that job particularly well. For all its grace and speed, it wasn't a very effective aircraft in any role :-(

Superior or not, I'll take one.
