I'm looking for some advice getting to and from the show: rent a car and park or take a shuttle/taxi ... how things were set up last year etc. ... and when to blow out for a 5:40 departure @ McCarran ... anyone?

Hummn.. if it were me, I'd just rent a car. I just flew into Vegas today and was to be picked up but, the way things worked out, it just made more sense to rent a car. Allstate has them for about 23 bucks a day..
On getting out on that flight... oh man.. you have your time cut for you!
It's DARK here by about 5:00!
Check http://nellisairshow.com/ for the scheduled times of the performances.. (I'd do it for you but the connection here at Nellis is SOOOOO bad, it'd take me forever to pull it up) and see what time the last performance you just have to see runs... figure it from there. Rental car returns are really close to the airport and shuttles run about every 15 minutes from most of them.
Weather report is... BEAUTIFUL! 70's during the day... a bit cooler at night..
