  • Wingman Quiz 5

Nobody ever really answered the questions in Quiz #4, but we will proceed anyway -- see if y'all do better with this one.

Here we have Race 85 at Reno. Give us the year this was taken. Should be very easy for those who know some Reno history -- several clues are present...

Give reasons (more than one reason) for your answer.

I'm guessing Reno '77. This is post "Iron Mistress" and the other John Seidel markings, but before Clay Klabo had it repainted and renamed "Fat Cat"
I remember Clay telling us that when he had changed the name and colors, he had the paint shop repaint the airplane three times trying to get a "high gloss Olive Drab" that didn't look black.
And "Fat Cat" still looked black from a distance.

      More cool stuff, Neal!

Your answer is correct, and you didn't even use the other clue. Does anyone know exactly when the "Iron Mistress"[markings came off? I thought they were still on in 1976, but I have a slide that seems to be from Reno 76 that does not have the name.

Would the name be on the left side only?

That's the clue I figured people would use. I almost cropped it out, but changed my mind.

I did a lot of growing up in the Deer Valley area between '79 and '82 and have some fond memories of "Fat Cat" and "Unruly Julie" from those years. I was very young but even so I always got the impression that Clay knew his way around a Mustang. Or maybe he was just crazier than the other pilots? No particular reason for the impression other than he seemed to push it a little bit harder, faster, lower. Or maybe it was the just his "pimped" up ride with the gold pin-striping!
