View Full Version : "Warbirds" - or stockers you'd be thrilled to see....

Just for fun;

Which would be your top three Warbirds (or post-war era stockers) that you would enjoy seeing on the race course? Must be actual flying types, within the restored warbird community today.

I've always dreamed of the Tigercat, well that's become a reality... So my three might be:

Mk.XIV Spitfire - Was nice to witness at Phoenix...
P-47 - Ditto to the above..
Tempest/Typhoon

Could go on and on...

P-47
P-38
A-26

If we are including jet class I would add the F-86

Mosquito......................any chance Rod Lewis will bring his newest warbird? Would love to see her on display at the Heritage Show or even making a few circuits around the course :)

My #1 would be the only flying (I think it is) Supermarine Seafire. Love that plane. I would add the A-26 and Typhoon as well.

I would enjoy to see the Seafire XV. I believe one was being restored in Canada.
And my most prefered it would be the FW190 Dora.

The Supermarine Mk47 Griffon mix-master Seafire flying out of Aspen, CO. (that was restored by Nelson Ezell in Breckenridge, TX a few years ago).

Bell P-39 Airacobra (Rod Lewis' or the CAF/P-63 Kingcobra will do for a consolation)

P-38 (Preferrably~ Lewis Air Legends' P-38F 'Glacier Girl')

"PLEASE" & ~Thank you very-much! :rolleyes::p;):thumbsup:

If we're REALLY gonna go crazy: A Dornier Do335! Like to see a Sabre-engined Tempest (just to hear the motor) and a Mosquito.
Oh yeah:P-61

P-61!!!! Now that would be amazing! Isn't there only one even close to flying right now? I wouldn't mind seeing it at an airshow let alone racing!

I've heard rumblings of Clay Lacy's purple Mustang "Miss Van Nuys" as a possible visitor for the 50th, whether she is a ramp static entry or a stocker class entrant, either way it would be sssooo cool!

Dawn patrol two ship with "Ole Yeller" on the ramp, perhaps

F-82!

Aren't there two being rebuilt? Maybe one needs to be Stregafied.....;)

A P47 would be sweet.

Besides great weather, a large crowd, I would be happy with a very large static display of past racers.

Also maybe RARA could offer some special reservation based sunrise photo ops similar to what Planes of Fames did at the P38 gathering.

I'm not sure that that particular deal has yet been done. Time will tell I suppose.

A Twin Warbird Class:
P-61
P-38
Do-335
A-26
Mosquito
F-82
F-7F

As much as I'd like to see a P-38 as the pace plane, I'd rather see it race. They can start the race with a B-25.

Really liking the ideas in this thread! Good fun!

It would be nice if somehow we could get what is now the Red Bulls P-38, back to Reno. I would love to see 'Ole Yeller' at least lead pace in a Bronze or Warbird race. What a hoot! Is going to be a pleasure to see it at Reno once more!

The Griffon powered Spit is always at the Top of my list, but I am excited to see Rod bringing the silver Tiger this year... i he going to run with the spinners on?? Hope so!

That battle between him, and 'The Rebel' last year was great. Looking forward to more. And The Corsair is very welcome as well.

I'm afraid those last two, Tempest/Typhoon, fall outside of your own guidelines for this thread! Too bad as I would just about give my right arm to see a flying example of the Tiffie. The Tempest is a real possibility in the not too distant future, albeit the Mk.II with a radial rather than the Sabre powered version. My top three would probably be these:

Mk.47 Seafire
Lavochkin La-11 (although technically not currently flyable I guess)
P-51H

It was damaged in an aborted take-off and subsequent off-runway excursion at Midland a few months back.

There is, sadly, only one Typhoon still intact, & it is in the RAF museum..
Incredibly, the Brits scrapped EVERY Typhoon & Sabre-Tempest they had..
& that Typhoon was only saved because it was in the U.S.A...

It had been kept by the Smithsonian, & they kindly swapped it
[it was a Wright-Patterson test exchange unit] for a Hurricane,
after the Brits went begging, having belatedly realized their stupidity..

But..Kermit Weeks does have a Sabre Tempest on long term resto' to flying condition.

A Napier Sabre powered Tempest or Sabre-Fury would be a strong contender for fastest mil-spec [stocker/piston]warbird at Reno altitude..
Their 'laminar-flow' wing [ a change from the thick profile Typhoon] gave +~20mph, on the same power as the Typhoon..

J2M3 or 5 Jack, KI-84 Frank, and a N1K1-J or N1K2-J George would make my life complete.:D

J.A.W.
08-17-2013, 08:26 PM
Or a Kawasaki Ki 61 'Tony',
since they went pretty fast on not much power, & had a higher Vne [500+mph] than most Nippon contemporaries..

J.A.W.
08-17-2013, 08:31 PM
A 'Tony', an Mc 205 & an He 100 might make an interesting D-B powered line-up..

& that He 100 went pretty fast [460+] way back in the day..

hm66sk
08-17-2013, 09:02 PM
Supposedly in 1946, the Air Force brought a captured Ki-84 to the US and tested it to its limits. By using 100 octane av-gas (unavailable to the Japanese) and super tuned by our techs, they surprisingly found the Ki-84 to be slightly faster than both the P-51D and P-47D at 20,050 feet. 426 MPH. That wouldn't matter at Reno but hey, we're dreaming here right?

J.A.W.
08-18-2013, 01:13 AM
Well, the USAAF W-B match-up oughta be against the 51H & 47N right?

& that Frank don't look quite so clever then, huh..

& didn't an 'unwanted' flying U.S.-based Ki 84 get sold back to Nippon, back in the day?

www.wwiiaircraftperformance.org has the data on Allied appraisals of those Nippon hot-ships..

Not attitude.. Altitude..

MiG 3 & those turbo Republic Jugs were built for speed at several times Reno height..

For sure, it takes a real racer - plane, team & pilot - to win..

But we'd also all surely prefer that even 'stockers' ought to be given the chance to pump that WFO crackle,
& hustle on down course - rather than be babied around on zero boost, eh?

M_Man
08-19-2013, 10:31 PM
At around 260MPH, it's slow as molasses in the Crimea in Winter, but I'd love to see an Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik lumber around the Unlimited Course!

Yeah, that one oughta be up & doing its evolutions..at Reno.. it is impressive..

I saw it at Ardmore ~10 years ago, being put through its - fresh from rebuild - flight testing..

Wonder what they wrung out of it.. @ 8,000ft..

One particular thought that has stuck in mind about that Lavochkin..

After seeing the closely packed 4 cannon engine-cowl package opened up..

.. & in combat..

Would've wanted a fair bit of trust in the old interrupter gear - 4 prop blades X 4 cannon = a bit of a dance..

..don't want it to get out of step, or 'toes' would be severely trodden on..

I was just looking at this idea yesterday and here is the post to run with it. The japanese Kyushu J7W Shinden it had one 18 cyl radial pusher. Its top speed was 469mph on 2,130hp. Drop in a 3350 a la the bear.. Wow there is your winner

J.A.W.

Never actually made that speed did it?

More of a paper-tiger/video-game coulda-been..

& how did the Northrop equivalent go..

Pusher & radial? Sorry, but not a good combo.. except for BBQ fans..

[ B-36 excepted.. after all, who wouldn't want one of them doing its best Al-overcast routine?..]

After the TFL crew flew most of their fleet round the pylons this year I figured we're due to resume this chat!

Rod Lewis' Mosquito is hoped to fly before next Easter, so Reno 2018 could happen...

The Supermarine Mk47 Griffon mix-master Seafire flying out of Aspen, CO. (that was restored by Nelson Ezell in Breckenridge, TX a few years ago).
YES! Watching videos of MA2 and PM on YouTube have made me really want to see the Seafire FR.47 at Reno. Could be a contender?
https://youtu.be/_YioXYhbVPA

Lavochkin La-11 (although technically not currently flyable I guess)
I'm not sure about an La-11 as TFC has theirs unrestored, but as a few others mentioned Jerry Yagen's La-9 was a revelation to see fly and would be amazing around the pylons - essentially a Russian Bearcat or Sea Fury according to Ray Hanna. Id never heard or seen anything like it!
