  • Gun Control? Would it do any good?

I'll begin by saying that I am shocked and saddened by the events of the past week or so. My condolences to all those who suffered...

OK... Went to a party last night and, of course, the recent shootings were a topic of discussion. Funny how what you see on TV regarding people's opinions on what good would gun control do, or would it even be worse than what we have now, and what you hear from average people in a social setting seem quite a bit different.

Pretty much everyone seemed to think that something like "reverse" gun control would make much more sense.. i.e. carrying a gun if you are an adult in a position where it might become possible that you'd experience an armed attack.. would be "MANDATORY"....

I know this is a very touchy subject for a lot of people, but I just have to get a feel on a wider basis... does gun control make sense to you? Background checks, absolutely, makes sense.... keeping guns out of the hands of average good people.. no way!

In fact, at the Oregon mall shooting the other day, a regular guy with a concealed permit had the sucker in his sights but could not get a clear shot... He stated in a local TV interview that he felt the gunman saw him aiming at him, this was at the point where the guy's gun jammed, this was the point that he went into a hallway and somehow, either got the gun working or used another to take his own life.. (thank you bad guy!)

OK... throwing the issue out for discussion, putting it way down here in graffiti section.

I got thick skin on this issue, I very likely will be getting my concealed permit as soon as humanly possible. Someone comes after me, or those around me, with a gun, I don't want to be empty handed and helpless...

    Wayne,
Living in TEXAS, there are schools where our teachers have a concealed permit to carry, and legally carry at school, and nobody knows who they are. Same situation as in Israel. You can't fix everything, but you can limit the damage!

Re: Gun Control? Would it do any good?

I just keep thinking over and over.. "what if?" It's very likely that the guy with the Gloc in his pocket at Clackamas Town Center Mall (Oregon) that was able to draw and aim at the guy might well have saved many.

It's just hard to see that having GOOD, well trained PEOPLE with guns in situations where there are BAD PEOPLE with guns doing bad things is a bad thing...

Damn, if I'm ever in a situation like has happened so many times, I'd dang sure want to be one with a gun... BeerNazi taught elementary school for her entire career, is an extreme peacenick and she's all for teachers having guns..

Really important for everyone to remember "guns don't kill people, people kill people"...

And even IF guns were completely outlawed today, there would still be guns in the hands of the wrong people. Too late to go back, going forward is the way to go...

that animal in oregon used a stolen gun did he not? so how does passing more gun laws change what happened. That's where the liberal mindset fails basic logic. criminals do not care about laws, that's why they are criminals. If the anti second wants gun control then go all out and go for repeal of the second amendment. lets see how that works for them.

According to the FBI the most used weapon to kill is the baseball bat, last time I went to by my son a new bat I did not have to wait 7 days to get it. Nobody whats to talk about why there is so many mental problems today and why the youth of today have no respect for life. I guess it is easier to blame a chunk of metal rather than the person behind it.

the nutcase in CT could have very easily kill that many or more by driving his car into the playground. should we ban cars?

I saw a statistic today that said that the average number of people killed in a mass murder ended by law enforcement is 18.25 the number of people kill when ended by an armed citizen is 2.2.

In florida, we will issue our 1 millionth CCW this week, by the gun control groups logic, we should have mass murders going on here every day. I have to wonder why these tend to happen in mostly blue states. I can't help but think that the fact that there is mostly an unarmed public has something to do with it.

law abiding citizens have nothing to worry about from my gun, however, anybody that wants to harm me or my family has a lot to worry about!

forget the sign in the front yard that says property protected by ADT mine says property protected By glock.

my belief is that gun control is being able to hit your target.

          Wayne,
I am 100% with you as far as the teachers need to be armed, how many more times do we need to see this happen when it might have been stopped? We have armed pilots now in our airliners why not teachers? So if a teachers dosnt want a gun, hows about a taser or even pepper spray? That would buy some time maybe. At least the teacher would have something to work with. Maybe locked gates at the schools? I dont know what the answer is. I know stricter gun control wont do squatt, like you said there are to many guns out there already. Sitting back doing nothing time after time is just plain insanity.
Washington is all over new gun control laws now, like that has worked well so far. :P
So I am with ya bro, arm the dam teachers.

Re: Gun Control? Would it do any good?

I think taking them away from good people, just gives the evil ones more power over the good ones. I read an article about Australia having a huge influx of home invasions after the good people had to surender their guns, and robberies went way up as well.

I couldn't agree more tow3. I think the real problem is states and the feds have all but abandoned mental health. Our jails are full of people with mental problems because frankly they are not being addressed. We can start addressing the root of the probem instead of the tools or we can just ban the tools, seems to be working great on the drug issue.

Re upped my long expired NRA membership today after watching the Sunday morning talking heads. Americans have no moral compass, we ridicule the very faith our country was founded on and we mindlessly idolize and canonized silly celebrities on all types. We need to have our hand held every time something bad happens to us and we look first to our government for the fix, we're pathetic! It's no wonder this is the direction we're heading.

Re: Gun Control? Would it do any good?

Tow 3 is of course correct. But he is an intellegent thinking person. We shall see more gun control that wont do a bit of good. And it will all be for political uses. Feinstein was talking with BATF Lawyers just a few weeks ago. This whole sad event has nothing to do with guns....but it is easier to blame guns than face that truth. Ugly guns will be banned.
The other day, I was helping a nice young man who is joining our state patrol in WA make a decision about converting a tired old Winchester 1897 pump shotgun into a WWI military trenchgun. So I did some reseach and remembered that the Germans (those folks that used poison gas) officially complained about the US use of M97 trenchguns as they could fire more projectiles per second than a machinegun by using buckshot. (Didnt do them a bit of good...we used it through Vietnam)
In fact, this 19th century weapon has a firing rate higher than an M16 on full auto. So is the govt going to ban 19th century shotguns too? Would it do any good? How about the 16 shot Henry rifle of the Civil war? The real question to be asked here is, "How come no one in the 1800s walked into their old school with a Henry and shot 16 kids?"

When something like this happens we get the knee jerk reaction to hold gun manufacturers responsible.

But what about accountability in Hollywood? Look at what's on TV every single night of the week, instructional videos on how to commit murder. Kids are growing up watching this crap!

Re: Gun Control? Would it do any good?

These tragedies have nothing to do with guns, they were simply the weapon of choice. Gun laws? It's illegal to own an automatic weapon, has been for a long time. I want one, I can have it by tomorrow if not sooner. I want to kill someone or commit a crime with it, the fact that they will tack an illegal weapons charge at the end of the list is no deterent.
These recent shootings and the copycats this past weekend are a symptom of much deeper issues in this country. Is it the constant stream of violence, the lack of strong morals and guidance in upbringing? I don't know but something big and evil is awakening.

I agree completely. Look at the list of violent video games out there. Why dont we treat those like the pornography they are? Ever see a TV show with gratuituous violance? Senseless machine gunning? Ever see a movie like that?
Leo is right in everything he says, and a big ugly mob is gathering outside our doors, ready to try and trade freedom for "security" and will wind up with neither....I am glad I saw America when I did, when Marshell Dillon felt bad about having to shoot that bad guy at the start of the show every week on "Gunsmoke" and Chuck Conners on the "Rifleman" only used his assault weapon for good, not evil.

For over 22 yrs I was in the Army Guard-Marksmanship Training Unit, Shot semi pro IPSC, Bullseye, SOF 3 gun (15yrs) and ran the local indoor range one night per week for a tactical weapons competition.
That said, I never shot in a Paint Ball match because feel that I might, in a stressful real life situation, just might forget and shoot prior to making the correct assesment of the situation.
Concealed carry is our best option
However , in New Mexico some people carry without a permit and know that if something happens and they shoot to save a life they will be up on a misdemeanor charge but they will not be on another list of gun owners that the govt has
