Only one other time: In 2003 it was Rare Bear on the pole with a 495.039 and Dago 2nd quick at at 492.722. Strega didn't qualify that year.

That is still the best ever qualifying speed for Rare Bear.

Dago has been over 490 three other times: 1996 at 490.826; 2002 at 497.787; and 2004 at 490.821. What a shame that Dago didn't end up with a very dedicated owner and team that could still be racing her. I think there were a ton of little things that still needed done to that airframe to get it on par with the Strega or Voodoo airframes of today, and just think how those changes would have made her even faster.

Um, in 1996 Dago went 490+ as you pointed out... but that same year the Bear qual'd at 491+. That would make at least three years with two planes over 490.

And technically, 491 in 1996 was faster than 495 in 2003 (go figure):eek13:

Thanks/ My son and I made big multi-color spreadsheet a few years back and the correct info was there but I missed it last night. Good catch!
