No, Juke. You're about 30 years off on your timing. The Caudron 561 that you highlighted was a 1930's racer, and Reno didn't start until 1964.

The only Caudron racer to ever visit the National Air Races was the C. 460 in 1936.

There is a full-scale replica that was launched in 2009, but to my knowledge it has never made an appearance at Reno for display.

It didn't. I wish it would have though, would have loved to see it before it went across the pond.

Outstanding link Juke, she is so pretty in the air, that it makes me wanna' run up on her!

(either that, or mate her properly with Howard's H-1 racer)

            Best Regards, Chuck

                  Re: Caudron C. 561

I thought there was a Caudron in the civvie hangar across from the formula hangar a few years ago?
If not, what replica was it? I did not put any effort into figuring it out at the time (or simply asking...).

I don't think we have that saying...thanks for the links...I had no idea the races were held in LA in 1936.

C 461 seems to be ½ metre longer than 561 since it has lighter smaller 6 cylinder engine...as 561 had 12 cylinder engine.

How hard would it be to fly this since you do not see forward at all ?

The French had a Caudron C-460 that won the Greve & Thompson races in 1936. It had a system where prior to the race air was pumped into the spinner causing the blades to go into low pitch. On takeoff a valve slowly let air out of the spinner allowing prop pitch to increase. It did speed dashes at 273.773 mph. Pictures of it are in Reed Kinerts Vol III Series #1,page 55. The plane & pilot was gov't subsidized & the US pilots put up such a beef that the plane never came back again. The plane was all wood.
