"Thunderous"

It has, indeed, been a while since this page was updated! We'll try not to bore you with the details of "why" the Picture of The "Week" feature here on AAFO has become something more like Picture of The "Month" but it's time to get cracking and get up some photos!

While putting up the "winners" of each class in this slot would be an easy decision, this week, we've decided to put up a real winner! None other than Mr. John Parker flying his American Air Racing "Blue Bijou" Thunder Mustang! John flew the week in journeyman fashion as he won his first heat race against the blisteringly fast Lancair Legacy entry of another another well known name in the sport, Darryl Greenamyer and Parker was leading the heat race on Friday when it was red flagged.

John does not fly with a "nickname," but if we were to give him one, it simply would have to be "Mr. Clean" for his exceptional flying, and fly exceptionally well is exactly what John did throughout the week at Reno. We could have put our camera on a tripod, adjusted it to where John was on any given lap and he would have flown through the viewfinder each time around. (it is also interesting to note that John's race speeds were also extremely consistent)

Pitted against the highly boosted twin turbocharged Legacy of Greenamyer, Parker flew his normally aspirated (read that: gasping for air at Reno-Stead altitude) Falconer powered 3/4 scale Mustang exceptionally well throughout the week. In any previous year at Reno, John's 331.676 MPH third place qualification speed and his 327.668 second place finish in the Sunday Sport Division finals might well have earned him a pole and a first.. but the bar has been raised in this Division and I suspect it will take a "Pumped" Falconer to best the raw speeds shown by Greenamyer's Legacy.

Is there more in Parker's Thunder Mustang? I would suspect the answer would be a huge YES! John worked his magic on the course and kept his lines clean and right where he needed to be, in the pits, the underworked normally aspirated V-12 received a quick check each evening and needed nothing more. What might we see from this airplane if American Air Racing were to install some sort of boost system to wrest some more power out of the airplane?

John's trouble free week is a testament to his flying skills and the excellent building and race preparation by himself and his talented staff at American Air Racing.

Our collective hats are off to a very competitive effort from this hard working race team!
