"Bent-Wing Bird"

click here for enlarged image and desktop wallpaper optionsEvery fan of World War Two era airplanes has a favorite, without question, you would be very hard pressed to find anyone who does not love the long legged "Bent-Wing" Chance Vought F4U "Corsair." This week, we offer several choices of photographs of this beautiful airplane for your desktop wallpaper selection.

First flown in May of 1940, over 12,500 of the rugged Pratt & Whitney R2800 powered fighters were built during the airplane's 10 year production run. The "Corsair" is credited with downing 2140 enemy aircraft, serving with several nations during World War Two, The Korean War, Suez Crisis, French Indochina and Algeria. As with many front line fighters of the WWII era, the F4U also saw action in various countries in South America after they were "surplused" out of the US inventory.

The airplane featured this week is F4U-5, serial number 122179, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R2800-CB3 engine, mfg.# P35441. Carrying FAA registration N179PT, our photo plane is owned by JRMC, INC. of Chesterton, Indiana.

The pilot flying this beautiful example of the type is retired Navy Capt. Dale "Snort" Snodgrass, a man we've heard described as flying "the best photo passes of anyone in the business." Having been click here for enlarged image and desktop wallpaper optionswitness to his flying skills, both in this airplane and his North American F-86 "Sabre" at the 2002 EAA Sun 'n Fun Fly-In at Lakeland, Florida, we would have to completely agree! "Snort" flies one hell of a warbird demo!

If you've ever seen the "infamous" F-14 carrier photo pass that "Snort" is probably most famous for, you will have a very good idea of what we mean!

Dale is one of the "Dream Team" scheduled to fly at the Aviation World's Fair 2003, his plans at this time are to perform in both the "Corsair" and the F-86 he flew last month at Sun 'n Fun.
